TOPIC 01 - Innovative synthesis and shaping

Powder synthesis, processing and shaping have a key role to play in the production of reliable and functional ceramic components. Significant efforts have recently been made to further increase the quality, sustainability and cost efficiency of future powder processing and shaping processes, and thus to open up new market potential for ceramic components and systems for future high performance and advanced ceramic applications.

TOPIC 02 - Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing allows the production of complex shaped products in small quantities. While there are already commercially available processes and marketable additive products in the field of metallic and polymeric materials, the additive manufacturing of high-performance ceramics in industrial applications was until recently almost untapped. This has changed in recent years, and the additive manufacturing of ceramic products has become a rapidly developing market. Topic 02 will provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art, possible applications and an outlook on future developments in additive manufacturing of ceramics.

TOPIC 03 - High temperature processes and sintering

Thermal processes and sintering play a decisive role in the formation of the microstructure and properties of ceramic materials. The topic 03 "Thermal processes and sintering" deals with these processes. In addition to conventional sintering processes, it also includes innovative processes such as cold sintering, flash sintering, field-supported sintering technologies (e.g. SPS, microwave) and other high-temperature processes such as joining.

TOPIC 04 - Advanced structural ceramics

Due to their mechanical, thermal and chemical properties, structural ceramic materials meet their requirements in mechanical and plant engineering. New developments are presented in Topic 04 with reference to the most specific areas of application. Submissions from the fields of oxide, non-oxide and silicate ceramics are desirable, if an emphasis is placed on the presentation of possible applications.

This symposium is focused on novel developments of composite materials. In particular, papers for the following topics are of interest:

  • Ceramic laminates and fiber composites
  • New manufacture technologies and testing techniques
  • Properties, in particular at high temperatures
  • Component design and applications

TOPIC 06 - Refractories

Refractories play a key role in all high temperature applications and cover all the strategic industries such as steel, cement, glass, petrochemicals, energy plants etc. The understanding of their mechanical, thermal, chemical and functional properties as controlled by their structure at nano-, micro- and macro- levels followed by chemical and physical interactions at interfaces/ surfaces is an unlimited tool for continuous development and optimization.
Today the price explosion of raw materials as well as environmental related restrictions challenges the refractory companies for a continuous development of innovative approaches in material design, material processing and product functionality. Following topics would be the focus:

  • Basic science of refractories
  • Refractories in metallurgical applications
  • Refractories in the chemistry industry
  • Refractories in energy plants

TOPIC 07 - Coatings

Ceramic coatings play an important role in modern technologies. In the coating session thin film deposition methods as PVD, CVD, Sol Gel and others are covered. In addition, also contributions dealing with coatings manufactured by wet chemical methods with subsequent sintering are welcome. A further important process is thermal spray, as examples atmospheric plasma spraying and suspension plasma spraying are listed here.
In addition to the processes, also contributions related to applications and characterizations of coatings are welcome. Functional properties e.g. isolative, conducting, dielectric and others are of interest. Also coatings to reduce wear are a topic. An additional important area are protective coatings, especially contributions related to thermal barrier coatings or environmental barriers are welcome.

Bioceramics in all their variants will be covered, including bioinert ceramics for implants and prosthetic devices, bioactive ceramics and glasses for tissue engineering and advanced applications such as medical imaging, drug delivery, and cancer treatment as well as for their use in bioreactors. Presentations will address both basic science and technological aspects related to the design, processing, characterisation and applications of bioceramics in both existing and emerging applications. Topics to be covered by the symposium include but are not limited to:

  • Bioceramics for medical implants
  • Bioactive Scaffolds for tissue engineering
  • Bone replacement, regeneration and reconstruction
  • Bioceramics for therapeutic ion and drug delivery

TOPIC 09 - Ceramics for energy, chemistry and environment

This topic will cover ceramic-based materials (including their microstructural design, processing and properties) which are relevant for components in energy, chemistry and environmental applications, such as:

  • Electrochemical devices for energy conversion and storage (fuel cells, electrolyzers, solid-state batteries, etc.)
  • Energy harvesting (thermoelectrics, hybrid perovskites for photovoltaics, artificial photosynthesis, concentrated solar power, etc.)

  • Dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric ceramics,
  • semiconducting or sensor ceramic materials,
  • magnetic and magnetoelectric ceramics
  • ceramics with optical properties

The topic covers fundamental aspects, e.g. microstructure- properties correlations, as well as topics of the ceramic technology, ceramic films or ceramic multilayer technology. Applications of functional ceramics, components and systems are also of high relevance.

TOPIC 11 - Characterization

The reliable fabrication of ceramic materials and components requires a broad spectrum of methods for in-process and final inspection and testing. In the framework of TOPIC Characterization contributions can be presented that cover the development of new testing methods, as well as new results gained from application of established methods for the characterization of dense and porous ceramics. The call is open for oral presentations and posters on evaluation of raw materials and additives, process control in ceramic manufacturing, the determination of mechanical, electric, dielectric, thermal, tribological, or optical properties, as well as on characterization of chemical composition, phase composition, microstructure, and surfaces.

TOPIC 12 - Modelling

The theoretical modelling of ceramic processes allows well-founded insights into the underlying physical mechanisms. Numerical process simulations based on these principles can then be used to design material properties, optimize process parameters or specifically improve component properties. The mini-symposium aims at bringing together engineers and researcher from the applied e.g. industry and scientific community and providing a lively exchange of ideas regarding state of the art and future needs for simulation technologies in ceramic technologies.

TOPIC 13 - Raw materials / Silicate Ceramics

Ceramic materials cannot be produced without raw materials. Although this is a truism, the focus is rarely on raw materials; they are purchased. In this context, accessory minerals in natural silicate raw materials, but also process additives in highly processed raw materials for technical ceramics, have a negative effect on the processing properties and the products. The session Raw Materials / Silicate Ceramics offers a platform for raw material suppliers and ceramic manufacturers on the following topics:

  • new preparation processes
  • mineralogical and granulometric requirements for raw materials / raw material mixtures
  • stability and ageing processes
  • identification of raw material-related causes for processing and product fluctuations
